Pine Marten

The pine marten belongs to the same family as the mink, otter and badger. Their habitats are usually well-wooded areas.

The pine marten is becoming widespread in Ireland with the population thought to be increasing. It feeds on small mammals, berries, nuts, frogs, lizards, birds and invertebrates.

While the prospects for the pine marten are currently good, habitat loss and fragmentation are a concern as well as woodland management practices.
