The golden eagle is dark brown, with lighter-brown plumage on the nape of the neck. It feeds mainly on hares, rabbits, squirrels and other small to medium sized mammals.

The golden eagle is red-listed in Ireland due to the very small breeding population. It is currently being re-introduced in Donegal.
